The sealant may be applied with a brush or roll, depending on the area of siding.  Brushes are better to get into smaller areas with grooves, while bigger areas can be easier rolled with an even coat.  Make sure to pay extra special attention to areas more vulnerable to moisture, such as joints, edges, and board ends.

Properly applied high-quality stain should last 5 to 7 years.  This greatly depends on the climate you are located.  Some sealing may need a light re-coating ever two years.

There are ways homeowners can extend the lifespan of their sealed cedar siding.  Experts suggest routine maintenance such as:

• Wash at least once a year.  A simple garden hose can make a huge difference getting the dirt off the siding, or pressure wash on the lowest setting.
• Periodically check for damaged siding.
• Trim any trees or plant life.  They should be at least 2 feet away from the siding.
• Maintain clean gutters that are not overflowing.
